Emergency First Aid

Each Lomond MRT member, in addition to their regular training, must be a qualified in First Aid. Once qualified, they are periodically re-assesed on courses designed specifically for Mountain Rescue, drawing on the skills and experience of their Trainers, all of whom are experienced rescue personnel with a wealth of mountain and first aid knowledge.

The Emergency First Aid Course is intended to give as much knowledge and practical experience as possible. The first morning is spent learning the principles of first aid, moving on to basic life support in an easy and logical manner. After lunch begins with an outdoor practical session reinforcing the morning's work, followed by common medical emergencies, wounds and bleeding, and shock, in the classroom; all backed up by a practical session. The second day starts with fractures, followed by the effects of heat and cold. The afternoon is then spent with lifting and handling casualties followed by various scenarios: for mountain and outdoor courses - outdoor safety procedure. At some point during the course a Basic Life Support skills assessment will be undertaken. Each certificate is valid for 3 years.

Mountain Rescue Casualty Care Certificate

The course syllabus and examination are set nationally to help all casualties receive the same high quality of care. This course further develops basic First Aid techniques and teaches candidates how to approach an incident scene and deal effectively with safety, examination, assessment and basic treatment of both medical and trauma casualties. Emphasis is placed on a thorough Primary Survey of casualties. Also to teach best practice through the questioning of casualties to ensure the most appropriate treatment, including pain management, is used for evacuation to definative care.

Emergency Medical Technician

This week long course cover more advanced techniques such as trauma, airway and 'C' spine; breathing, anatomy and Physiology; oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, defibrillation, shock; head, chest and spinal injuries. Medical problems, analgesia in pre-hospital care, skills bases and scenarios. There is an exam with a written paper and skills assessments. It is recognised by the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and BASICS Scotland. The certificate is valid for 2 years with an annual refresher.
